5 Ways To Avoid Foot Problems

Neuropathy, or nerve damage, is a common problem faced by people with diabetes. In fact, 60 percent to 70 percent of diabetes patients will have some form of neuropathy during their lifetimes — in many cases the problems will involve the feet. The nerves can be damaged by high blood sugar levels. People with neuropathy may be unable to sense pain in the affected areas.

Here are seven tips from Crystal Holmes, a certified wound specialist and podiatrist at the University of Michigan Health System, to avoid diabetic foot problems.

1. Check your feet daily. Take a moment to examine your bare feet for cuts, swelling or blisters. Look at the top, the bottom and between the toes.

2. Protect your feet from heat and cold. Never use hot water bottles, heating pads or electric blankets directly on your feet. If your feet are cold, put on a pair of socks.

3. Always wear shoes. When you are at home or on the beach.

4. Trim toenails when needed. Cut them straight across and carefully file the edges with a nail file.

5. Check blood sugar levels every day. Keeping diabetes under control is the best way to avoid foot problems.
